Wimmera late on Saturday night-, after all the passengers had retired. The chief engineer, . the first and second officers, and the boatswain located the fire among a number of bales of flax. The officers mentioned took turn; in going below with a hose. In a couple of hours the fire was extinguished without the passengers being aware of the outbreak. The vessel sustained no damage. Several bales of flax were buPnt. (Received December 14, 1.1 a.m.) Sydney, December 14. Tho fire on the steamer Wimmera is attributed to spontaneous combustion in the flax. A quantity of cargo in the vicinity of the flax was damaged with water. The Wimmera is the well-known steamer of the Hudd art-Parker Company's fleet, trading between Melbourne, New Zealand, and Sydney. The steamer left Wellington for Sydney on Saturday evening last.
