SUFFERING- FROM CONSUMPTION.
A RECENT ARRIVAL FROM ENGLAND. : [BY TELEGRAPH.—PRBSS-ASSOCIATION.]. ~ CHnisrcHUKCH, : Tuesday. A touxg man named Alfred Henton, who recently'landed from the Morayshire suffering from consumption, was taken to-Nurse Maude's camp. It is now'stated that'the captain of the Morayshire is willing to help' the young man back to" England, and the owners are anxious to do all they can to aid Henton while hero and facilitate his return Homo. , The young man referred to in, the above telegram landed first in Auckland and then went South. As some surprise has been expressed in Ohristchurch that ho was allowed to land, Dr. Sharman, the port health officer, explains that all that is possible for the port health officer is a careful facial examination. A detailed examination would bo an impossibility without a large- staff of medical men. In the ease of the Morayshire the ' declaration of the master of the ship gave an unqualified negative to the following questions:—l 9 there any sickness of any kind on board at present, and (2) are there any persons suffering from consumption on board?.. -Not a passenger, vessel comes .into port but,, at least two or three passengers are ordered to stand aside for further inspection when their faces betray the possibility of illness. >. When any ease of illness is discovered a bill of -health is granted conditional on the master satisfying himself that the patient will not become acharge on the State. Dr. Sharman is of opinion 'that a thorough medical examination should be made at the po;-t of embarkation, and that immigrants should be informed of the provisions of the Immigration Restriction Act.. Dr. Sharman states, that the passengers as a.rule object to any. special examination. " '• '
