THE SAN FRANCISCO MAIL
-: ARRIVAL OF THE SIERRA. The mail steamer Sierra arrived from San Francisco and Island ports shortly before four o'clock yesterday afternoon. The Sierra did not leave San Francisco until November 24, 16 hours' after contract time, the delay being, duo to the overland mails being behind time. On the passage to Honolulu very stormy, wcathei was experienced, a succession" of gales and .'heavy -seas prevailing for three days. . Honolulu',' was reached on November 29, and the steamer having a large cargo to land did not resume her voyage until the next afternoon.' Fine weather prevailed on the run toi Pago Pago, which port. was made on December 7, and after a ; stay- of seven hours, the Sierra left for Auckland. Fine weather continued, and port ; was made as above." The time from San Francisco to Auckland; was" 17 days 7 hours I 15 minutes, the actual steaming time .being ■ 16 days 7 hours 11 minutes. * '; The Siena had a fair number of passen- ■ gers for Auckland, and also for Sydney, the \\ numbers being for Auckland 47- saloon, 35 second saloon, and five steerage; for Sydney, 36-saloon, 27 second saloon, and four steerage. A number of passengers join.", the ■ steamer '. at Auckland.• • ,''•-'. The mails by the steamer were of the following dates—London, November 11; New York, November 18; San Francisco, November 24; Honolulu, November '30; Samoa, December 7. The Southern portion of the mails wore landed by one of : the Ferry Company's steamers shortly after the Sierra arrived and taken out to Onehunga by specia' - train, aud put on board the Rarawa, which, left for New.-. Plymouth in the- evening, crossing the Manukau Bar at a-quarter to- eight o'clock.'■> ■ The cargo by tho steamer was a very largo one, comprising 1579 tons for Auckland and 1360 tons for Australian; ports. Included in the shipments for Auckland were 6797 cases potatoes, and shipments of both green and dried fruits-. The : steamer has ,-for Sydney about 2000 sacks of potatoes,', it is under* stood that about 600 sacks of these will be landed at. Auckland. -..-.?
