THE GISBORNE LINE.
The Auckland Chamber of Commerce and Auckland Railway League ought to take immediate steps to cooperate with the Gisborne Railway League for the pushing forward of that line. Mr. Carroll, speaking, at Gisborne this week, proposed that a' strong deputation of Auckland and East Coast members should wait upon the Minister for Public Works to urge the claims of the line. This is a movement to which all our Auckland members and several of our provincial organisations should give their fullest support, so that there may be no further neglect of this important railway, which ought to be at Opotiki within a comparatively short period,, and should thence connect with the Auckland, system by the quickest and most advantageous route. The East Coas't is one of the most progressive, if not actually the most progressive, districts, in the colony, having the best of soils and the finest, of climates, and is only undeveloped because of its isolation and the absence of transit facilities. These drawbacks we hope to see removed as speedily as possible, but as nothing ever comes to those who do not ask, we would impress upon all who are interested in the matter the duty of asking uncef singly and eoncertedly for what can be so thoroughly justified. As the whole country between Auckland and Gisborne is within the commercial sphere of this city, our citizens in particular should, make it their business to assist the Gisborne people in securing those legitimate railway facilities which will not only advantage that district, but increase the trade and commerce of Auckland and the prosperity of the entire colony.
