ATHLETIC CHAMPIONSHIPS.
[BY TELEGRAPH. —PRESS ASSOCIATION.] Dtjnedin, Monday. At a meeting"of the Utago Amateur Athletic Association to-night a motion was passecj expressing disapproval of the action of the New Zealand Association in connection with the selection of the team to represent New Zealand- at the Australasian championship meeting, as the method adopted does not allow of the best representative team being selected. A Chrifttchurch resident, who travelled towards Carterton the other day, tells an amusing story illustrating " force of habit." A man got into a railway carriage in which several ladies were seated and cleared a > place for himself. It required an expert/ in physiognomy to detect that the man was well primed with alcohol, but to an ordinary observer his face did not betray signs of intemperance. He merely looked a trifle unwell. He solemnly seated himself, removed his coat, folded it and placed it beside him, took off his boots, set them outside the carriage door, and went to sleep.
