MEETINGS.

DEVONPORT BOROUGH COUNCIL. A meeting of the Devonport Borough Council was held last night, and was attended by the Deputy-Mayor (Mr. Win. I-landlcy) and Messrs. W. Timewell, E. G. Ford, D. McLean, C. C. Dacre and C. P. Murdoch.

Resignation of a Councillor: Mr. F. E. Mason's resignation was read, and on tho motion of tho Deputy-Mayor it was accepted with extreme regret. Mr. Mason was thanked for his serricce.

Treasury Notice: A notice from the Colonial Treasury was received to the effect that the subsidy of £187 10s had been appropriated in respect to the Council's contributions to the Auckland Hospital and Charitable Aid Board. It was resolved to send the papers to Mr. E. W. Alison, M.H.R., at- Wellington, to protest against the action of the Treasury.

International Exhibition: Mr. H. W. Wilson, town clerk of the Auckland City Council, wrote inviting the Council to nominate representatives sitting on the committee of the New Zealand International Exhibition for 1906-7. The Mayor (Mr. E. W. At ison, M.II.11.) and the Deputy-Mayor (Mr. Wm. Hand ley) wero appointed delegates to represent the Council. ,

CITY SCHOOLS COMMITTEE.

A meeting of the Auokland City Schools Committee was held iu the Wellesley-street East school last night. Present: Messrs. P. Crowe (chairman), A. H. Chappell, H. F. Kimber, A. Rosser, A. Thome, Sherson, W. .Jeffrey.

Wellesley-street- School: The Board of Education wrote stating that a special meeting of the Board was to bo held oil Wednesday to consider the matter of turning the Wellesley-street school into a normal school, and asked for an expression of opinion of tho committee on the subject. It was resolved to send a reply to the effect that as it had been determined that the school should bo placed beyond the supervision of the committee, they did not feel themselves in a position to offer advice in a matter placed beyond their control; but they strongly recommended that the two nearest schools to Wellesley-street —Chapelstreet and Nelson-street—be enlarged without delay so as to provide accommodation for present requirements and for the others who would ultimately leave Wellesley-street school. The chairman and Messrs. _ Rosser and Maokay wero appointed to wait upon Mr. Hogben, Inspector-General of Schools, during his visit to Auckland re enlarging Nelson-street school for tho additional scholars from Wellesley-street. Stereograph Pictures: A large number of letters were" received from the headmasters of the schools in Auckland in reply to the committee's inquiries re the advantage of stereograph pictures. The replies were generally in favour of the pictures being obtained, as they had proved a good adjunct to the teaching on various subjects. A good deal of discussion ensued as to whether the committee could legally expend any money on the purchase of tho pictures, and it was ultimately decided to ask the Board of Education for its opinion oil tho matter, and, if legal, whether the Board would be prepared to pay half the cost of obtaining pictures for the whole of the schools in Auckland.

DUKE OF ALBANY LODGE.

The installation of officers of the Duke of Albany Lodge, 2073, E.G., took place in the Masonic Hall, Helensvitlo, on October 18. A very large gathering of Masons assemi bled. The W.M. elect, Bro. G. F. C. Hosking, was installed in the chair by Bro. C. I H. Clinkard, D.G.S.W., the installing master. The, W.M. then Invested his officers as ' follows:—Bro, Sellers, 1.P.M.; Bro. Hadrill, S.W.; Bro. Hill, J.W. ; Bro. Downer, treasurer; Bro. Manning, P.M., secretary; Bro. Curtis, 8.D.; Bro. Thompson, J.D.; Bro. Freest, 1.G.; Bro. Main, tyler. After tea the brethren assembled at the Foresters' Hall, where a most enjoyable evening was (spent at tho Masonic ball, 85 couples being present. The music was supplied by Mr. Meredith's . band, and gave great satisfaction.
