The East and West Railway Committo of the Chamber of Commerce received a letter from the West Coast Railway League, agreeing to the committee's suggestion,'that "a combined . deputation from '' tlio' West Coast and from Canterbury should wait on the Government 'and urge 1 the speedier prosecution of the construction of the uncompleted portion of the "Midland railway, with a view to the com- ? pletion of the work in five years The deputation from the West Coast wall be a ■ ery influential one, and will leave for 5 ' Wellington on August 24. The combined deputation will make a special feature of the request that the work of constructing I Arthur's Pass tunnel be let by public con- ■ ' tract, the work to he completed in a certain specified period.
