Mr. Carrtjthers, in the Legislative Assembly yesterday, stated that in April • last the Agent-General was informed / by the Colonial Office that the whole question, of British trade in the German islands of the Pacific was engaging the earnest attention of the Imperial Government. Later, the Agent-General cabled that Germany'appeared to be desirous of outwearing the patience of the parties interested. A ( suggestion by the various Agents-General that no orders should be placed in Germany until redress was granted was under the consideration .of . the New South Wales Government. The Sydney Morning Herald, in urging the necessity of dealing with the matter, says:—"As their (the Germans*) scheme $ land grants is combined with the proposed penal settlement, it threatens to give lis a highly undesirable -neighbour. We have escaped the menace of French criminality only to find Australia face to face with a similar possibility from Germany/' Melbourne, July 26. Mr. Deakin is making inquiries with regard to the report that a German convict settlement in the Pacific is to be established, with a view to communicating with the Colonial Office. Berlin', July 25.
