ATHLETICS.

Messrs. A. E. Shrubb and A. 1". Duffey have completed their colonial tour. On Saturday last at the international mooting on the Sydney Cricket Ground Shrubb won the Two and Three Mile Handicaps, and on Easter Monday established a fresh Australasian record for two miles at the Concord sports, Sydney, covering the distance in 9m. 33 3-ss. This latter was undoubtedly an excellent performance. It is also worthy "t note that although the South London liar riot has run over the three-mile course on several occasions sine© he set foot on colonia' soil, lie failed to replace W. F. Simpson's record of 14m. 495., his best being 14m. SC o-ss. He has. of course, something better to his credit (14m. 17 3-55., established in 1903), and in his best form, with all conditions favourable, would no doubt have reduced Simpson's figures, but it must nevertheless be gratifying to the New Zealand runner to find that his time still holds good as fur as the colonies are concerned. Duffer's best effort on his return to Australia was 6 2-ss. for 60yds and 10s. for 100 yds. (J. A- Whoatley, the brilliant Victoriar, middle and long distance runner, got among j the record's at the Concord sports (Sydney) | viii Saturday last, when lie hoisted fr"sh Ausi tralasian figures for the half-mile. Pre. bahly steps will be taken to form ■». bran' l> here shortly, as one or two prominent citizens have offered to take an active interest it: any movement that may be initiated to that end. Arthur F. Dutfey. the famous American sprinter, has a good oninion of ihe yo uig New South Wales sprinter, Nigel Barker, and says; that if he was at one of the Am -n can universities instead of Sydney, and was trained American style, on fast cinder tracks, lie would do something big. Prodigal," of the Sydney Referee, in commenting 011 Shrubb's ime of 4m. 26 3-ss. for the mile 011 the Sydney Cricket Grouti 1 last Saturday week, ventures the opinio:' that with "pace" to assist him. mid tin? track hard, lie would have got in-idc 4m 20?.
