POLICE COURT NEWS.

Yesterday's sitting of the Police Court was held before Messrs. E. Ford and Morgan, J.P.'s.

Drunkenness: Three first offenders were fined 5s each and costs for drunkenness. In another cas,e bail of £1 was forfeited, the person failing to appear. Catherine iiardwick was fined 10s and ordered to pay costs for the second offence.

Remanded: Percy Charles Shanagan, on a charge of breaking and entering at Panmure, and Charles Krou, on a charge if theft at Henderson, were remanded for a week. Stipan Raain, on a charge of assault and destruction of property, was remanded until to-day. Squabble on a Scow: Abel Grund was fined £5, or, in default, a month's hard labour, for committing an assault on George Darrock, master of the scow Totara, on which accused was employed. Mr. Bauriie appeared for Grund. According to the evidence the trouble arose on board tins vessel owing to a squabble about an axe. Dr. Ferguson's evidence was to the effect that complainant had to have 21 stitches put in to wounds on his head. His nose was fractured. Mr. Baumo culled evidence to prove that accused was reported to bo*a temperate man, and asked that the case be summarily dealt with. The request was granted, with the result as recorded.

A Charge Dismissed: Thomas Brennan, who pleaded not guilty, was charged with vagrancy. Tho evidence of Constable Tait was to the effect that Brennan had clone no work during the two months he (the constable) had known him, and that he was found in Albert Park at half-past two yesterday morning. A Salvation Army officer testified that Brennan occasionally slept at the home, but that he was turned out. shortly before midnight because he persisted in going to bed in his boots. Ho was in tho habit of rising very early in tho morning, and going out to wander round the town. Brennan contradicted the constable's assertion that he did not work, stating that ho had done a month's work since January last, and he was not in tho habit of sleeping in' tho park. Tho caso was dismissed.
