THE ARBITRATION SYSTEM.

A LABOUR PROTEST.

APPEAL TO PARLIAMENT.

[BY TIXIXIUPH. — I'BKSS association.]

Di.N'F.Dix, Friday. Tub Otago Trades and Labour Council has issued a statement condemning the new tmdeL'-ralo clause first adopted l>v tho Arbitration Court in tho Noslon carpenirYa' award a few months ago, which is said »o be such a serious blow at some of the fundamental principles on which the arbitration system is based, that tho Council is compelled to make the strongest possible protest against the innovation, and to urge- the trades councils throughout the colony to join in an effort to secure' Parliamentary action in the matter. It i~ ;i!"j stated that the action of tho C'jnrt in intp'.di!-.-ing ibis clause is only the culminating point in a long .-.cue-. of decisions and awards of the present Court unsatisfactory to unionist!!. The inevitable result ha* been to drive the workers to talk of adopting other methods of securing justice. The statement expresses some confidence that an appeal to Parliament to redress the existing evils will not be made in vain.
