BUSH FIRES AT WAIKIEKIE.
A GLOOMY PROSPECT.
Our Waikiekie correspondent writes:Tha district is being devastated by disastrous fires. Hundreds of acres of much-needed feed and standing bush have been swept by the fires. Some settlers had practically all their feed burned, and there are the gloomiest of prospects ahead of them. No feed means no milk, and in consequence of the fire and drought combined, the local factory may have to close down. The heaviest losers are Mr. Janies Hartnell'Cwho' has lost practically all his feed), Messrs. Berridge and Sons (who have had some hundreds of acres of feed burned), and Messrs. Stephens and Sons. Settlers have been lighting day and night to try and keep the fire in check, and as there is no prospect of rain their task seems hopeless.
