According to the Ashhurst correspondentof tho Manawatu Standard, some citizens who look upon themselves the burden of the constable's duties while that official was absent on leave had a lively time. Ihe necessary duty of conveying a drunken roan to the lockup was carried out splendidly, and tho offender was duly searched and placed under lock and key. But the scene changed at break of next, day, when it was discovered that the lockup was on fire. However, the half-suffocated prisoner was rescued, and the lire extinguished.
