After sighting the Lizard the ship Khyber lost several of her sails and became unmanageable. She drifted shorewards, and anchored late on Tuesday 400 yards off' Porthcurnow. Towards morning she began, to drift. Heavy seas breaking' over her forced the crew into the rigging. The mizzenmast then carried away and five men upon it were drowned. It was impossible to launch the coastguard's lifeboat. The vessel went on the rocks and broke up immediately. - A man named Willis jumped overboard and was washed ashore. He revived after an hour's artificial respiration. Seamen named Harris and Johnson, gained a rock and were rescued with great difficulty by means of a ladder and a rope from the cliff. The vessel has been reduced to matchwood. The Khyber belongs to the Galgate Shipping Company, and .left Melbourne on October 27 for Queenstown with a cargo of wheat. She had a crew of 26, of whom 23 were drowned. The New Zealand Telegraph Department received the following notification yesterday:—" Porthciirnow, in Cornwall, advisea that all land lines to London and' Liverpool are down."
