TWO GIRLS DROWNED.

Armidai.i: (N.S.W.), December 30. A shocking drowning case was reported to the local coroner this morning. Mrs. E. C. Shape, of the Anchor Hotel, Wollomboi; Miss Gardner, aged 18, domestic servant, and Miss Kennedy, aged l->, daughter of -Mr. James Kennedy, of Armidale, went, to j a waterhoie in the Wollomboi River, late j yesterday afternoon, for the purpose of bathing. It' was thought the hole was shallow, j but it had been washed out by a recent fresh, and considerably deepened. When Miss Gardner went in she sank immediately. Mrs. Snape rushed forward to render assistance. She, too, went under. Miss Kennedy pluckily endeavoured to rescue the struggling women, hut got beyond her depth. Mrs. Snape's daughter ran to the hotel, and brought iter father to the scene. He arrived just in time to rescue Mrs. Snape only, who was clutching the grass growing by the ; side of the stream, in an exhausted condi- i tion. The bodies of the two girls were recovered, but all efforts to restore animation failed. An inquest was held, and a verdict , of accidental death returned. I
