POLICE COURT NEWS. Saturday's sitting of the iPolice Court was held before Mr. S. E. McCarthy, S.M. Drunkenness: Mary Richards, a prohibited person, was given three months' imprisonment for a fourth offence. Two first offenders were fined 17s 6d, and ordered to pay the cab hire, 2s 6d in each case. Threatening Behaviour: Norman Campboll, charged with threatening behaviour in Custom-street, was lined 40s and costs, in default one week's imprisonment. Remanded : Nora Williams was remanded till to-day, on the application of Sub-Inspec-tor Black, on the charge of attempting to steal from the person of Arthur Bailey. Opium Case: Clung Hing was charged with smoking opium. Mr. Cotter, who appeared for accused, pleaded guilty. Ching Hing was also charged with having opium in his possession, but Mr. Cotter pointed out that a, man could not smoke opium without having it in bis possession. The magistrate said there could not be two separate convictions recorded. He convicted Ching Hing on the charge of smoking opium, and fined him £10 and costs. Alleged Robbery: William. Martin and Martha Johnson, alias Telleburton, were charged with stealing one £5 note and six £1 notes from James Mannix. They pleaded not guilty. Mannix explained that he wen! with the two accused to a boardinghouse in Hobsoii-streot. He , gave Martin a pound to get some drink, and be remained with the woman. When Martin came back with the drink witness told him to put. the change on the dressing-table. but Martin put it in his (Mannix) pocket, at the. Mime time taking out a bundle of notes, and walked out of the room. Martin had. £3 on him when searched at the police station, and Mannix's money was subsequently Found in the bedroom of the boardinghouse. The accused denied stealing the money. The magistrate said he considered Mannix's story to be tho more credible., and sentenced Martin to three months' imprisonment. As the magistrate thought there was nothing to connect Johnson with the charge, he discharged her. Martha Johnson was further charged with using obscene language. Sho said she "did not remember using it." As the language was very vile, the magistrate sentenced her to two months' imprisonment. Prohibition Order: Edward Jones, on the application of his wife, had a prohibition order issued against him. Stealing a Purse: Chief-Detective Marsack applied for a remand of Robert MeMurtrie, charged with stealing a purse in a train between Rotorua and Auckland on January 5. MeMurtrie was remanded till Friday. Bail was allowed in two sureties of £50, and himself in £100.
