This being so the committee found themselves ia the invidious position that what they considered their just wishes could be safely set at defiance by the head-teacher, and considering the position unworthy of the committee and intolerable to the members, they tendered their resignation as a protest. It was decided to forward an explanation, as to the powers of committees on the point raised to the Kawakawa Committee, and to suggest that they should reconsider theii decision as to resigning. * School Cadai Encampment: The officer commanding the cadet forces of the colony (Colonel Loveday) wrote suggesting that an encampment of the public schools' cadets in the Auckland district should be held during the last week in the school year. The Board decided to take an expression of opinion from the headmasters on the matter before moving further. A Country .School Difficulty: Manurewa residents asked that the Woodside school should be removed into their district, and this was opposed by the Woodside Committee. As an alternative the Manu rewa residents offered to build a school provided the Board supplied the teacher. After hearing deputations the Board deferred the matter pending a report from the inspector. High School at Davenport: It was decided to apply to the Department of Education for a grant for the establishment of a district high school at Devonport. A Matamata Application: Mr. Greenslade urged the Board to take immediate steps to have a school erected on the Matamata Estate. It was pointed out that the matter had been referred to the inspector to report on the question of site, etc., and would claim attention as soon as the report came before the Board. The Nelson-street School: Mr. R. Hobbs drew attention to a paragraph published in the Hbraio of September 7 in which a member of the City Schools Committee (Mr. P. M. Maokay), when complaining of the Board's refusal to provide additional accommodation at the Nelson-street school, had said he had a feeling that the school was being neglected on account of antagonism towards the headmaster for his religious beliefs. Mr. Hobbs said there was certainly no ground for such a suggestion, and he thought that Mr. Mackay should be asked to state whether he had been correctly reported. Mr. Parr said that if they were going to take exception to every remark by members of school committees not meeting their approval they would have their hands full. The matter should be treated with the contempt of silence. Others having spoken in similar strain Mr. Hobbs decided not to move in the matter.
