After a fortnight's enjoyable autumn weather rain fell from early this morning, and the prospects of holding the first day of the Wellington Racing Club's autumn carnival looked none too promising. At nine o'clock a fresh northerly gale was driving over the town, and the Hutt, where the racecourse'is situated, was enveloped in fog. However, at ten o'clock the appearances were brighter, and the stewards decided to go on with the meeting. The threatening weather, though, had its effect on the attendance, and at no time during the day could there have been more than 2500 present, if that, and there were very few ladies present. Shortly after the racing commenced the sun broke through the overhanging clouds, and the course .looked bright and merry, but before the chief event was decided the wind, which had been fresh from the north-west, suddenly whipped round to the south, and while the horses were at the post for the Thompson Handicap, which is the popular race of the meeting, a disagreeable southerly came up and the rain squall made things uncomfortable for all. Then again there came a change, and the afternoon remained fine. Had the elements been kind to the club there is no doubt that with the large fields taking part this year's autumn meeting would have been one of the most successful in the annals of the club. As it is the club will probably have to face a deficiency. The stewards were late in declaring their intention to race, and the result was that at the time for starting the Waiwetu Handicap the totalisators were not ready for investment, and this in itself proved a loss to the club, in addition to delaying the races. The club, following the idea initiated by the Canterbury Jockey Club, opened a 5s

The club, following the idea initiated by the Canterbury Jockey Club, opened a 5s tote, confined to the outside enclosure and paying out on the first horse only. Some £585 was passed through this machine, and its inauguration cannot be regarded as very successful.

Shrapnel Shell made his reappearance in the Waiwetu Handicap, and being suited by the soft going ran a good race. Dexterity looked all over a winner at the distance, but TVlrovna qhopped her down in the straight. The other Dunedin candidate (Kremlin) did not make a good show, but should win before returning home. Nothing had any chance in the Silverstream Hack Handicap with the Gisborneowned Rchua, although Lindsay allowed Lady Bobs to make a race of it. Rehua is a good, reliable colt, and should be able to hold his own in open company, in which ho will now have to take part. Ghoorka was withdrawn from the Thompson Handicap in favour of Exmoor. Shrapnel (who lias a nasty cold), Bounce, and Shrapnel Shell, were the other withdrawals. Seventeen horses went to the post, which equals the record number of starters for the mile race when Lottie won. Canteen was on his worst behaviour at the post, and gave a lot of trouble. Sanfoin, after two breaks. got the best of it. He and Vladimir led alternately, then Black Reynard and Exmoor took charge. The latter was going best at tha turn, where Full Cry came out of the ruck, and wearing the leader down won by about a neck; Buluwayo and Starshoot close up to the Reynard gelding. Full Cry went out at a false price, and paid £13 15s. Jenkins had to nurse Exmoov, who wall not race under punishment. Bagpipes and Regulation were never prominent. The heavy going suited Slow Tom in the Hurdle Race, and he won from end to end, repeating his performance in the Winter Hurdles at the Hutt last July. On J. W. Taggart's arrival from Sydney last night A. Hall was engaged to ride Slow Tom. When the weather turned out wet this morning the owner and trainer backed the gelding with confidence, and had a good win. Waiwcia was the least backed of the 10 runners, 'id appeared to bo anchored in the mud Levant's chance was spoilt by getting hung un in the barrier at the start. Midia proved herself a game pony by beating Killarney after a punishing finish. One of this pair should win at Manawatu. The Heretaunga Handicap was a soft thing for Sandy, who was purchased by his present owner at New Plymouth at Christmas time for a few pounds. Ho recently won five times at the Greymouth and Reefton meetings, and should further add to his successes at Manawatu.

The Challenge Stakes was the easiest of wins for Mr. Stead's English-bred colt Martian, who won hard held from Treadmill. Signalman, a stable mate of Treadmill's, got third money. Boris got chopped at the start, and finished in the rear with Golden Lily. After his form at Folding and Masterton Gawain was sent out a good favourite for file Tinakori Hack Handicap. He appeared to have the race in hand at the distance, but George Price, taking things apparently too easily, Woodmount, on whom Sceats rode a desperate race, snatched a win in the last bit. Woodmount carried the colours of Mr. T. W. Armitage, of Auckland, who was unsuccessfully represented by Jewellery and Lady Bobs.

In the Railway Handicap Petrovna put up 71b penalty, and ran a good mare to the turn. After shaking Bounce off, Machine (Inn looked like coming in by himself. The heavy going appeared to stop him at th* finish, and Melodeou, coming well on the rails, scored by about a length. Hitherto Melodeon has been regarded as a stayer rather than a sprinter.

The- Auckland Racing Club's winter programme will require attention at the hands of horseowners by nine p.m. to-day, nominations closing for the Grand National Hurdle Race, Great . Northern Stooplechaso and Winter Steeplechase.

Nominations for all events to be. run at the Takapuna Jockey Club's winter meeting close to-night at nine o'clock.

The first race of the Avondale Jockey Club's meeting to-morrow is fixed to be started punctually at half-past twelve p.m.
