FRUIT CANNING INDUSTRY.
APPOINTMENT OF EXPERTS.
We are informed on the best authority that Mr. Johns, president of the Fruitgrowers' Union, who goes Home by the Ventura on May 20, has been commissioned by the Premier in the matter of Californian canning experts. Two are to be appointed — one for the North and one for the South Islandand we understand that liberal terms will be offered to induce capable men to enter the New Zealand service.

Mr. W. Jacques, who has been appointed fruit and vegetable canning expert for New Zealand, was for 11 years manager for Cunningham, de Fourier and Co., the wellknown London manufacturers of canned preserves. He has had tne supervision of all their manufactures, and is well qualified for his new duties. Mr. Jacques is likely to arrive in the colony towards the end of next month. The duties of Mr. Jacques will be to instruct fruitgrowers in the work of canning their products, so that the waste of fruit now allowed throughout the colony every season may be stopped.
