MINING EXAMINATIONS. [from our. own correspondent.] Wauii, Saturday. Several references have been made lately to a falling off that has taken place in the attendance at certain classes of the School of Mines, and also to the failure on the part of many students to compete in the annual examination-,. Mr. P. Morgan, | director of the Waihi School of Mines, again drew attention to the matter at the ; last meeting of the School of Mines Council. His report- on the question is as fol- j lows:—"The chief cause of the fall tug-off j in the mining class (which ought to be one of our largest classes) is. perhaps, the fewness of the openings for trained men in New Zealand, but the nature of the examinations for mine-managers" certificates also has a deterring effect. The standard of these examinations from an educational point of view is not too high, but the questions asked are on the whole of such a character as to encourage "cram" rather than an intelligent, well-considered course of'study. Under present conditions schools of mines must teach for these examinations and gain passes, otherwise they would fail to fulfil the chief condition that has called them into existence, but thd dual result is largely to discount their educational value. Her.co a feeling arises that it is not worth while attending ji school of mines unless there is a probability of its leading to a billet. Tims the cause of true education suiters."

WAT HI G.M. CO. [BY TELEGRAPH. —OWX cobrespqxdext.] Waihi, Saturday. It is expected that a trial of the YVaihi Gold Mining Company's new pumping plant will take place next week, the huge pumping rods having been lifted to-day. The plant, is so complete that not a hitch is expected, and as its capabilities are so great the Waihi Company will be in a position now to thoroughly explore their lower areas and open up practically a new mine. THAMES BORING OPERATIONS. [BT TELEGRAPH. —OWN" (■QHUKiI'ON'Dr.M.] Thames, Saturday. At noon to-day the borehole in the public's ground up the Moanataiari Creek had attained a depth of 478 ft. It is still penetrating hard rock. The Victoria Cold Mining Company's borehole is down about 1000 ft. There is nothing fresh to report from the Kur.mui-Caledoniau Company's borehole. SHERIDAN G.M. CO. [BT TELEGRAM. OWX CORnE.SrOXDF.XT.] Thames, Saturday. A crushing of 10 loads of ore from the Sheridan Gold Mining Company's mine (Tapu) has been completed at the Fame and Fortune battery for the payable return of 21oz 17dwt of*melted gold, valued at £3 j Is per ounce, or a total of £56 12s lOd. • The ore crushed was won from the drive and leading stope upon ike main reef at the 70ft level, the average width of the reef being 9in. A block 80ft in length is now opened up and available for stoping, but there is a large extent of country ahead which has yet to be explored, whilst the same reef is also available for driving uponat the low level, • 120 ft below the present workings. OLD ALBURNIA G.M. CO. [BY TELF.OKArn. —OWN CORUEaPONTDEKT.] Thames, Saturday. The new reef intersected last week in the Moanataiari tunnel by the Old Alburnia 'Company is just getting clear of the face. It crossed the drive at rather a long angle, continuing for about 16ft. Its width is about 3ft, and it is composed of a highlymineralised class of ore, and encased by good sandstone country. No gold, however, was seen in the ore broken out. The management's intention is to continue the tunnel without any loss of time. NEW ECLIPSE G.M. CO. Tey TELEGRAPH.--OWX CORRESrOXttEXT.] Thames, Saturday. Some doubts at present exist as to whether the reef which is being driven upon at the low level in the Eclipse Gold Mining Company's mine is the same body as that worked upon at the upper levels. A survey was made a few days ago, according to which the reef that is being followed is too far in the hangingwall country to be the same as the one. worked above, but this doubt will probably be settled later on by driving a crosscut into the foot wall country. The reef in the face of the level has opened out to between 6ffc and 7ft, in thickness, and bears a most promising appearance. For the last 50ft or 60it of driving the "dig"' has been carried in on the hangingwall, but it is now intended to gradually cross the reef and get on to its footwall, which will prove its exact dimension, and should also prove whether it has any connection with any other reef on that side.
