AUCKLAND HARBOUR BOARD.
The ordinary meeting of the Auckland Haiboui Board was held yesterday afternoon. Present: Mr. J. T. Julian (chairman),' Hon. E. Mitcheliion, Messrs. J. H. Witheford, M.H.R., F. E. Baume, M.H.R., A. Alison, J. M. Laxon, A. Glover, J. Walker, J. Parker, and W. J. W. Philson. "" ,
Notices to mariners were received from the,; Calcutta,. Queensland, and South Australian" marine authorities; also the New Zealand ■Marine Department. King's Drive: The general manager of railways (Mr. Ronayne) wrote with reference to the King's Drive roadway, ', stating that the Minister for Railways (Sir Joseph Ward) was unable to see his way to authorising the repairing of the roadway by the Railway Department, but was prepared to consider the allocation of the amount necessary to put the road in a proper state of repaii to be allocated between the City Council and the Harbour Board.
Breakwater Road: A letter was received from the Minister for Railways, through Mr. Witheford, M.H.R., in which reference was made to the proposal by the City Council for the improvement of, the road, and stating that ho could not see how the proposal could have been seriously made. The work would involve serious inconvenience, could not be undertaken except at great cost, and, further, the Department could not give up lands for the purpose of widening this road. The letter was ordered to be forwarded to the City Council. , '■;■% Examination Shed: A letter was received from the Chamber of Commerce in reference, to the accommodation -of the examination shed, Queen-street Wharf, stating that the Chamber intended to apply to the Commissioner of Customs to provide further assistance at the accommodation shed cm Queenstreet, Wharf. • The letter was received. Orakei Cattle Wharf: A communication was received from the Department of Roads, relative to the Orakei Cattle Wharf Road, stating that the Government was prepared to authorise the expenditure of money voted towards the cost of constructing the road in connection with the landing, but the Department reiterated their former conditions with regard to the acquisition- of the land for the purpose. A long letter on the urgent need for the work proposed to be carried out was also received from Mr. B. Hall, secretary ~ to. the Auckland Agricultural and Pastoral Association. The letters were received. Miscellaneous: The Northern Swimming Club was granted the use of the. Calliope Dock for April 1, if not then in use, failing that, the Graving Dock, subject to' the same condition. The Orakei Road Board wrote pointing out that bathing and swimming horses was carried out "in their district, arid' asked the Board to prevent the same; but the secretary was instructed to write to the' Road Board, pointing out that the Board had no power to interfere. An application of W. D. Rathe, a deckhand of the launch Kuaka, for compensation for loss of effects, through the sinking of the vessel, was referred to the Legal and Finance Committee. W. Lang, contractor, was granted extension of,-time for procuring keel blocks Twentysix applications were'received; for the post of mate of the launch Kuaka. A;proposal. of, the '' City " Council '".' to. exchange', land in Emily Place for land at Blockhouse, Freeman's Bay, was accepted. ;•" ..
