CONFERENCE OF SCHOOL COMMITTEES.
[BY TELEGRAPH. — ASSOCIATION.] Dunedin, Tuesday. At 8 meeting or the Schools Committees' Conference it was resolved to protest against the proposal carried by the School Inspectors' Conference dealing with powers if committees in the appointment and suspension of dismissal of teachers, such being detrimental to the.best interests of schools ; it was also resolved that it is desirable to extend the powers of the school committees by altering clause 45 to "appointment" by school committees subject to power of veto by education boards, if reasons can be shown for the exercise of such veto. It was further decided to protest against the miserable pittance paid to teachers below the rank of first assistants. With respect to free places, it was resolved that in the opinion of the conference an entrance test of free pupils . from the primary schools should be an educational test : and not an ago limit. ,
