The 13th annual report and balance-sheet of the National Fire and Marine Insurance Company, for the 12 months ending September 30, to be submitted to the shareholders at- Dunedin on Tuesday, November 17, have been issued. The net revenue for the year amounts to £121,241, and aftet paying an interim dividend of £7500 there is a surplus of £13.121, to which has to be added the balance from last year amounting to £15,124, a total of £33,245. A sum of £10,000 has been added to the reserve fund, reducing the balance to £23.245. The directors recommend the payment of a further dividend of Bd per share (making the total distribution for the year Is 6d per share), which will absorb £7500, and to carry forward £15,745. During the year the company opened a branch office in West Australia.

A sensational scene is said to have occurred on November 1 in one of the Christ-church churches. The service had concluded, and whilst the members of the choir were descending from the loft (.rips in a high-pitched female voice were heard from the top of the staircase. On investigation it was found that a male, stranger had been embracing on.: of the lady members of the choir, and even continued his behaviour after other members of the choir appeared on the scene. He was told that unless he desisted the police would be called in, but the threat. only elicited the statement from the unknown that he had known the lady for many years, and had a right to embrace her. His "statement was not borne out by the lady's manner. Ultimately he was prevailed upon to go away, and the incident closed..
