LAW AND POLICE.

MAGISTRATE'S COURT. Mr. H. W. Brabant, S.M., held a sitting of the Magistrate's Court yesterday morning. Judgment Summons: T. Fisher, represented by Mr. Smith, sued W. Rickctt for £2 15s 7d, amount due on judgment. Defendant, making no appearance, His Worship ordered defendant to pay the amount claimed within one month. In default, he would be sentenced to one mouth's imprisonment.

POLICE COURT NEWS.

Yesterday's sitting of the Police Court was held before Mr. T. Hutchison, S.M. Drunkenness: Alexander Hedley, who did not appear, was convicted and fined 7s 6d. Non-attendance of School Children: Fines were inflicted as under on the following for failing to send their children to school: — Henry Hawkes, Ms; Mary Ann Smith, 22s 6cl; Flora Walsh, Us; Chas. Gilbert, 16s; Honry Riekard, 10s; Charles Cooper, 7s 6d; Arthur Barrett, 15s; Thomas Chaplin, 16s. Application for a Separation Order: The adjourned case in which Alice Sarah Moulden applied for a separation order, under the Married Persons' Summary Separation Act, against Henry James Moulden, was again called on. Mr. J. Alexander appeared for the petitioner, and Mr. J. R. Reed for the defence. The petitioner, who was called, stated that her husband was drunk almost every night, and was very violent at times. He was brutal to her, and had turned her out on one occasion into the street while she was in her nightdress. Defendant denied his wife's statement. He said that trouble had arisen between them over undue familiarity between his wife and one of the boardors. She had cleared out from him, but he was now willing to forgive her, and to take her back. His Worship adjourned the case for one month to give the parties an opportunity of coming to a mutual arrangement. Maintenance: An order, by consent, was made against John Albert Castles, to contribute 5s per week towards the maintenance of his" illegitimate child. Mr. J. R. Reed, who appeared for the prosecution in another case of a similar nature, asked for, and obtained, a remand for a week, in order to give the parties an opportunity of getting married. Alleged Idle and Disorderlies: The adjourned cases in which Alexander Anderson, Ella Regan, and Minnie Bisman were charged with being idle and disorderly persons, and with keeping and assisting in the management of a brothel, were heard before Mr. H. W. Brabant, S.M. Sub-Inspector Black represented the police, and Mr. J. C. Martin the defendants. Further evidence was called for the defence, giving a total denial of the police allegations. life Worship said he would adjourn his decision until eleven o'clock this morning.
