The only business in old potatoes has been in resorted Canterbury, which were worked off in very small lots at about 3s 6d nor cwt. Resorted ■ lots for country and shipping orders wore worth about 4s 6d per cwt. New potatoes • caiho forward in increased quantities, but the majority were dug too soon and were verysmall. Prices at auction yesterday showed a large decline on last week's rates, and it ia generally understood that the prospects ahead for the new crop are poor. More than the usual quantity of kidneys have, been planted this year, farmers fairly rushing tho variety known as " Up-to-date." The market is absolutely bare of onions. Tho last consignments from San Francisco were landed in vary bad order, the result being that the only supplies obtainable have been from Melbourne and Sydney, and these have, also arrived in bad condition. The now Sydney crop should be on the market in about four: weeks' time. Vegetables were in. fair supply at rather better prices than last week. The butter market has not been overstocked, and so far. as factory was concerned only sufficient came to hand to supply booked orders. Dairy makes sold higher than last week. Egg« . were in unlimited demand at from 9d to 'JJd per dozen. Bacon and hams showed a considerable decline, with plenty offering. Cheese is remarkably scarce, and no loaf was procurable to fill orders for the Islands by Wednesday's steamer. ' The most important item in the fruit market was a heavy shipment of ' ■, fruit by the Taviuni from Fiji, consisting of about 2000 bunches bananas, in addition to a large number of cases of bananas and pines. All were landed in splendid order to a good! market. The Talune landed from Sydney on. Monday about 1000 cases of Sydney and Tas-• manian fruits, all of which were in very bad order, and realised low prices, in many cases resulting in a loss to shippers. Ouitside of lemons and a few windfall oranges, no local! fruit was sent forward. Lemons show no improvement in prices, and there is no prospect of a change. Good oranges are wanted) < badly. Poultry was in much, heavier sup-.: ply, but prices ruled light. Young pigs aw» ia unlimited demand as high prices. The following were tho ruling prices at the auction; wales yesterday: Field.
