Maize is weak after rather heavy sales of new grain. Further arrivals aro exacted at lower rates, A few trucks of Waikato chaff have arrived during the week, and all of good quality has been in demand. The price ranges from £4 5s to £4 10s at the station, but the offerings of poorer quality are difficult to place. Southern is selling at £5 upwards. Another shipment has arrived by the Talune. Oats are in heavy. supply, and the market is a little easier, both here and in the South. Grade oats should keep their value, as prime quality are not plentiful in the South:, and, in fact, a large quantity of the crop has not been harvested at all. The poor qualities will be the trouble this season, as large quantities have been damaged, and will be offering at low rates. Oatmeal and rolled oats are in demand. The mills have been unable to execute orders for the latter this week.

Bran is in short supply, but shipments are due next week.

American wax candles have been landed from the Louise Roth, and are being distributed at s|d. The 'local candle company have reduced the orice of mining and Union candles by a farthing pur lb. Cornsacks are again in short supply, the small shipment by the Gracchus having quickly passed into second hands. Van Houten's cocoa has sold freely during the week.

Private advices from Singapore show a hardening market for canned pineapples, l£lb tins being already much higher. This fruit is increasing in local favour. The Essex left Wellington last Sunday for South Africa, a full ship. This trade is assuming larger proportions, and the Cornwall nnd Cooevanna are already announced to follow. The July steamer will probably be the Rippingham Grang?, which is expected to make Auckland the first port of call after leaving Sydney. As this will be the first time that a vessel on this line has called here, the opportunity will no doubt bo seized by shippers who are anxious to try the market in South Africa. Already there aro inquiries for space for timber and produce. Cabled advice from San Francisco shows an advance in canned ' fruits, and the new pack will be higher than last season's rates. Tho quotations for the new season will shortly be available. • Dried fruits have been in good demand, especially currants. Sultanas are rather slow of sale. The shortage of Symington's essence of coffee is causing some inconvenience to the trade, and the arrival of a shipment next month via Wellington: is eagerly awaited. Flax has not been coming in very freely lately 011 account of the wet weather. Demand has been heavy, especially for binder I twine, of which another shipment will' be sent by the mail steamer this week. This is the last shipment for the season, for any more would be too late for the American harvest, and the local price is too hich for forward buying. The London market is weak at present, but shipment may be induced by the reduction of £1 per ton in freight, commencing on July 1. The timber trade continues brisk, with heavy local and export orders.
