SOCIETY FOR PREVENTION OF CRUELTY TO ANIMALS.

[BY TELEGRAPH. —OWN CORRESPONDENT.] Wellington, Tuesday. The Wellington Society for .the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals, and kindred societies in other centres, are appealing to members of Parliament for support in a request to the Government for a pound for pound subsidy upon moneys collected by these societies. Amongst other members written to by the Wellington Society was Mr. F. E. Baume, M.H.R., who states in reply that he is in thorough sympathy with the movement, and -that while he cannot pledge himself as to the exact amount of pecuniary assistance he is prepared to ask the Government to grant the societies, he is willing to join in endeavouring to obtain some such assistance. The reply of Mr. W. F. Massey, M.H.R., was that he had every sympathy with the work of the society, but could not give any pledge of support to the proposal, as he believed the time was rapidly approaching when it would be necessary to reduce the expenditure for other than the most urgent purposes.
