SENSATION AT MARTON.

MAORI WOMAN WOUNDED.

ATTEMPTED SUICIDE OF HER

HUSBAND.

[Br TELEGRAPH.— ASSOCIATION.]

Marton, Saturday.

Ox Friday afternoon, at Rata, a Maori named Kereopa Ihaka is alleged to have made a determined effort to kill his wife with a carving-knife, inflicting a deep wound, in her neck. He then endeavoured to knock his own brains cut by running full tilt at a brick chimney, and, not succeeding, attempted to cut his throat with a knife. The knife was taken away from him, and he then made a dash for a tomahawk, arid struck a severe blow on his head, inflicting a big hole in his skull, but this was not fatal. Surgical advice was obtained from Hiuiterville. The doctor Says if the wound had been a quarter of an inch deeper it would have been fatal. Both Kereopa and his wife were removed to the Wanganui Hospital this morning. Kereopa's wife, though weak from loss of blood, was not dangerously wounded. On his recovery Kereopa will be charged with attempted murder. The cause of the affair appears to have been jealousy.
