"MOUNT CAMPBELL."

It has been suggested to our readers by a correspondent that the name of One-tree Hill should be changed to Mount Campbell. This is a happy suggestion, which only has to be made to win hearty and unanimous support, and we are sure that a resolution to that effect brought forward at the City Council would be regarded as affording members the opportunity to express the grateful desire of the public to embody the name of the "Father of Auckland" with this munificent gift of his to his fellow citizens'. The old name of Maungakiekie has departed from One-tree Hill, and the term which has replaced it is neither meaningful nor correct, the " one tree" being a clump. But the immortal beauty to which it gives prospect is unchanged and unchangable, and there .is no fitter title for the hill than the name of the man who preserved that prospect for the public and with it the beautiful park in which it is set. Now that the roadway is being opened an. everincreasing stream of visitors will flock to what we hope to know as Mount Campbell, for the view therefrom is without compare in the vicinity. Mount Eden shows an expanse of hill and valley, .land and water, sea and mountain, that travelled people declare to be among the finest in the world. But those who know the hill-top which Sir John preserved to Auckland " for ever" do not hesitate to place Mount Eden second. None can gaza from the summit of " Mount Campbell" without heartfelt gratitude to the giver and a keen feeling of how tenderly he regarded the city to which he gave the jewel that, from among many, he had chosen as the fairest. That we should name it after him would be a token of appreciation, passing down to the centuries, which is the only form of recognition that we can make.
