SCHOOL COMMITTEES.

PONSONBY. The following candidates have been nominated for election to the Ponsonby Schools Committee: —Messrs. W. J. Rees, A. S. Russell, J. Gittos, C. J. Parr, W. Taylor, J. W. Stewart, D. J. Wright, G. Gregory,. A. N. Snedden, A. Littler, G. W. Wilcock, and W. J. Morgan. The annual report of the outgoing committee, to be presented to the meeting of householders convened for the night of the election (Monday next) states that the receipts for the year ending •March 31, 1903 (including balance in bank at April 1), were £376 lis 7d, and expenditure £299 4s sd, leaving a credit balance of £77 7s 2d. The total number of pupils on the rolls of the.Church-street, Richmond Road, and Bayfield schools was 1688 and the average attendance 1512, as against 1690 and 1526 for the previous year,. The attendance at all the schools was very seriously affected by the unprecedented series of epidemics that ran through the city during the"latter part of 1902. With regard to school buildings, the report states that the interior of the Church-street building is still in urgent. need of repainting, but that all endeavours to get the Education Board to undertake the work proved futile. The ;• committee had recently arranged to have a portion done partly at their own expense, the Board to contribute the balance. The chairman of the Board had intimated that the Board would very soon add to the accommodation at this school. ' The Board's architect had been instructed to investigate with regard to alleged bad ventilation at Bayfield school in the old part of the building. This latter portion was not at all suitable,. and must without doubt be removed at an early date. The relations between the committee and the Board had been on the whole harmonious during the year. A rupture had occurred on the occasion of the appointment of a first assistant at Bayfield, the committee very justly condemning the so-called "consultation" which took place between the Board and committee.
