A TRADE RIYAL

NEW ZEALAND AND RIVER PLATE METHODS CONTRASTED. [BY TELEGRAPH.—PRESS ASSOCIATION.] Wellington, Tuesday. The Department of Commerce and. Industries has received a copy of a report made to the Agent-General by Mr. Cameron, the New Zealand Produce Commissioner in Loudon, with reference to the distribution of New Zealand and River Plate meat in England. Mr. Cameron says that though New Zealand sent 38,892 more carcases of matton in 1900 than in 1991, the consignment came to hr.nd with great irregularity. For the first seven months of the year the number received each month from New Zealand was satisfactory. Then, during the following two i. iths the shipments were doubled, bat during the last quarter of the year supplies received were not nearly sufficient to meet the ordinary market demand. When New Zealand shipments fell off those from River Plate were increased, and the opportunity taken of pushing sales in channels formerly open to New Zealand. Prices Were kept moderate, and every means were used to induce retailers, who had previously handled New Zealand mutton, to substitute River Plate. Several markets were greatly developed in this way. Mr. Cameron goes on to say that the methods of River Plate shippers'are on a sound business line, and a strong contrast to those of New Zealand. Unless the latter makes a drastic change she will fall behind.
