RAILWAY EXTENSION AT WHANGAREI
STOPPAGE OP THE BRIDGE WORKS. A wire was received from our Whangarei correspondent yesterday stating that the construction of the railway bridg* across the Whangarei River had been temporarily stopped by the Government. This bridge is being erected in connection with the extension of the railway from Whangarei to the deeper water • at Grahamtown, but opinions are divided as to the necessity for the work, it being asserted by many that the cost of deepening the channel to the present wharf would be considerably less than the cost of the railway to Grahamtown. As .the bridge is being erected between the harbour aid the town it is argued that it will be an' obstruction to traffic, and it' is also claimed that the money would be better expended by . being devoted to the extension :of • the ', existing railway with Whangarei to the Bay of Islands district. These views have been communicated to the Minister for Public Works, and Mr. Vickeraan, district engineer, ': has proceeded to Whangarei in connection with the matter. So far very little work has been done in connection, with the construction of the bridge.
