ONEHUNGA SCHOOL COMMITTEE.
The monthly meeting of the Onehunga. School Committee was held last night. Mr. J. : Howe (chairman) presided. A letter was received from the headmaster in reply to a •letter from the committee, asking if he could explain why more scholarships' had not been obtained by the school. < Mr.- Mcintosh stated that the children-- probably -did not possess/ the necessary ability, or that they lacked the necessary ambition to qualify- for winning scholarships. Again, scholarships cannot be obtained by children of ordinary "ability unless they receive extra tuition outside of school hours; but this.'special coaching for scholarships is not part of a teacher's duty under the Education Act. On the motion of Mr. McLean it was agreed that the headmaster be thanked for his reply, and the committee consider his explanation quite satisfactory. The headmaster reported 568 names on the school roll, with an average attendance of 474. The Chairman ■ reported that the committee appointed at the last meeting to wait upon the Premier during his recent visit to Auckland in regard to the district high school at Onehunga had not been able to do so owing to the Premier not having fixed a time for the meeting. It was j resolved to inform the Auckland Board of Education that several letters and telegrams had been received by members of the Onehunga School Committee from the Premier, stating that the Onehunga school would be gazetted a district high school, and requesting the Board to ask the Minister for Education what is the exact position of the Onehunga school in regard to this question.
