THE BIBLE IN SCHOOLS.
TO THE EDITOR. Sir —May a Protestant be allowed to remind' you/ correspondent signing 1 * " Loyala," that if the Roman Catholic Church lias been successful in "'"mug men to her side and into her fold she has succeeded chiefly through the spirit of humility, the tenderness, and the heroic self-sacrifice, the saintliness and other-worldhness so conspicuous in many of her devoted workers, and not least in the founder of his society. Iho spirit displayed in hi. letter, however, and especially in tin threat which i* conveys, has won her other victories, but they have been won by the shedding of more innocent blood than was ever shed in the reign of a Nero and by the moat exquisite and poignant agonies that even the mind, so fertile in torture, of that monster- ot cruelty could devise. One cannot but feel ashamed at the miserable spectacle of Protestantism so divided against itself, but even ' Loyala must confess that the two most civilised nations of the modern world whore it is paramount, give the society to which h> belongs the most generous hospitality, when denied by such countries as Catholic France. It is absurd to call this movement in favour of the introduction of the Bible into the schools " an attempt to fight Romanism. The movement is a very noblo one, and would receive the hearty support and sympathy of all thoughtful men, and succeed were it not for that widespread and unhappy dissension and disunion which is tho present agony of Protestantism, lar from fighting Romanism, Protestantism, m the condition it now is, assists it.—l am, etc., J.V.J .
