I WATTEMATA. i Tbt- monthly meeting of the Waitemata County Council was held at Palmerston Buildings yesterday, Mr. J, O'Neill, chair- j man, presiding. All the members were pre- j sent. Riding Balances: The riding balances to May 31 were as follows: — Wainni, receipts ii-if 7s lOd, expenditure £372 lis 9d; Tafcapuna, £19 is 5d and £447 Sis 9d; Northcot*, £152 19s 7d and £84 19s lOd; Birkenhead, £4 17s and £164 8s 6d; Kaukapakapx, £zj 4s 5d and £232 19s 10dj Mairetam, £s3 7s i'-i and £('3 12s 9d; Waital:erei, £183 16s 3d and £100 3s 8d; Waikumete, £7 lis bd and £<ioo Is 3d. Deputations: Mr. J. M. Johnston waited on the Council, asking for a railway crossing on the Waitakerei Road, beyond Henderson. at an estimated cost of £40. It was decided that the Council would contribute £20 towards the cost of construction, on the condition that Mr. Johnston and other owners of the adjoining block contribute a similar amount. Charitable Aid Contributions: A circular was read from the Auckland Hospital and Charitable Aid Board, intimating that the county's contribution for the year 1902-3 amounted to £431 lo.> sd. It whs pointed out that there was an increase in the amount of £75 is, and it was decided to ask the Board for an explanation as to the increased demand. Stewart's Bridge A letter was road from tile Helensville Town Board, asking the Council to pay the contractor for the bridge at Stewart's, iaelensville, the balance (£SO) due to him, the Board to refund the amount to the Council on receipt of their license money. It was decided to pay tho amount. Upper Waiwera Bridges: " Sixteen ratepayers of the Upper Waiwera petitioned the Council to take the necessary steps to repair the two bridges on the road in that district, pointing out that unless immediate action was taken the bridges would not be passable. Trio matter was referred to Mr. Hatfield, to report at next meeting of the Council. Dairy Flat Road: Mr. S. H. Green wrote pointing out that the breast cuttings abovo Holder's, in the Volfcner deviation on the Dairy Flat Road, were almost impassable to vehicular traffic, and would become absolutely to unless immediately attended to. Referred to the engineer with power to act. Infectious Diseases Hospital: At the request of the district health ofiicei (Dr. Makgill) and in order to facilitate the scheme for the erection of an infectious diseases hospital for the district, it was decided that the chairman and clerk should attach their signatures to the agreement entered into on April 28 to contribute towards the cost of the same. Rodney Council re New Road: Tho clerk of the Rodney County Council wrote asking the assistance) of the Council towards opening up a new' road to connect tho Upper "Waiwera with the South-Western Road, and pointing out that the reason for seeking help was because the proposed road would be the nearest and best outlet for a number of tho Waitemata County's ratepayers residing in the Upper Waiwera. The cost was estimated to exceed the Government grants by £150, and the Rodney Council's request for assistance was supported by a petition from the residents in the Puhoi and Upper Waiwera, who pointed out the great benefits to them that would accrue from its formation. The matter was referred to the engineer to. report on at next meeting. Summer Road: The engineer reported on the cost of a summer road from Mayfield to Crook's Corner, as asked for by the settlers residing in those parts,, and it was decided to defer the matter till the September meeting of the Council. Greonhithe Road: The engineer reported having visited the Greenliithe Road, in company with the riding member (Mr. Wilson), and stated that arrangements had been made for certain improvements to allow of the schoolchildren attending school without inconvenience, and also to repair the approach to tho wharf. The report was adopted. .. Church-street. Northcote: A number of residents of Church-street, Northcote, petitioned the Council to form a footpath on the south side of the road, and pointed out that there were six occupied houses on the side in question. The matter was referred to Mr. Bruce, with power to get the path formed. Application for Road Access: Reporting on the application of Mr. J. P. Sinclair for road access to section 23, Swanson, the engineer said the improvements necessary to the existing road to give access would cost about £18. It was decided to ask the applicant what sum ho would be prepared to contribute towards the cost. ".. Colonel Burton's Comolaint: The engineer in reporting on Colonel Burton's complaint re encroachment of Rummer Road (Lake Taka•puna), at the entrance to his property, recommended that the approach be made on the top of the rise about three chains beyond the colonel's crate, and that a footpath be formed about Bft wide for, say. three chains. The cost would be small. The matter was deferred till next meeting on the suggestion of Mr. Alison. Land for Road: Writing on behalf,of Miss Thompson, Messrs. S. Voile and Sods drew the attention of the Council to the fact that although their client had agreed about a year ago to give certain land at Northcote for a road on the condition that the road was formed within 12 months, nothing had apparently yet been done. It was decided to call tenders for foothpaths, returnable for next meeting of the Council. Application for Road: Mrs. Esther Smyth applied to the Council to have a road surveyed to her section near the Waitakerei railway station. Referred to. the engineer to report at next meeting. *■ Mairetahi Roads: Messrs. Alfred Buolcland and Fenton Brothers wrote complaining of the state of this road, and urging immediate repairs to save heavier cost hereafter. On the motion of Mr. Phillipps, it v as resolved to authorise Messrs. Fenton Brothers to get the work done on behalf of the county. Waimauku-Rewiti Road: Mr. W. G. Phillips wrote, drawing attention to the bad state of a crossing on the Waimauku-Rewiti Road. Referred to the engineer, with power to act. Clearing Roads, Mairetahi: On the motion of Mr. Phillipps, it was resolved to call for offers for the firewood now growing on the by-road adjoining Mr. MacNaughton's property. Proposed Wharf, Waiwera: Mr. Hatfield laid upon the table plans and specifications in duplicate of the proposed new wharf at Waiwera, drawn by Mr. H. M. Wilson. After consideration, it was decided to approve of the plans, and to forward them to the Marine Department for their sanction. The wharf will be 1620 ft in length, in addition to which there will be a tee 50ft by 30ft. Both wharf and tee will be supported upon railway iron piles. Proposed Telephone, Hobsonville: As in reply to the Council the residents declined to make any contribution towards the cost of maintaining a telephone, the matter was deferred. Whau Bridge Contract: Mr. A. Watson, contractor, asked for an extension of_ time owing to the difficulty of getting suitable material. As the contractor had recently made good progress with the work, the application was favourably received. Accounts: Accounts amounting to £428 7s lOd were passed for payment. OHINEMURI. [BY. TELEGRAPH.OWN CORRESPONDENT.] Paeeoa, Friday. At the meeting of the County Council last night it was decided to co-operate with the , Thames Borough Council in the effort to get the Piako swamp lands drained and opened up for settlement. Mr. Moore said that some of the land could be opened up at once, and there were plenty of people who were anxious for it. Portions of it could bo easily drained, and it would be & good thing for Paeroa. The need of the Government pushing ahead the Paeroa-Waihi railway with more expedition was referred tc by the chairman (Mr. H. Poland), who moved, "That the Government be written to asking that the work be pushed on in a business-like manner." It would be a good thing for the whole district when the railway was completed. He said there were plenty of unemployed who would be given work if the railway was pushed on. Mr. Marrinan seconded the motion, which was carried. Messrs. Miller and Porritt wrote to the County Council stating that the Council's* cheque for £150, held in trust by them for a hospital at Waikino, would he returned at any time to the Council. They also asked if the Council would pay any share of the £225 expenses incurred by the Hospital Board in objecting to the Waihi application for a separate hospital district. The, Council decided that it was not in favour of paying any portion of the money mere than they would have to pay as part of-the hospital district.
