TE AROHA DOMAIN BOARD.

. «. __ THE usual monthly meeting of the Te Aroha Domain Board was held on Wednesday evening. Present: His Worship the Mayor, and Messrs. Wallace, Thomas. Pilling. Donald, O'Mcagher. Laybourn, Sherlock, and Alay. Mr. T. E. Donne, Superintendent of the Tourist Department, wrote statine that, if necessary, ho would instruct Mr. Corlett, inspector of buildings under the Department, to reneat his visit to Te Aroha, taking with him Mr. Pearson, the landscape gardener at Kotorua, to advise the Board in laying out the Domain grounds. Mr. Donne also "forwarded the following extract from the report on the needs of the Te Aroha Domain and thermal springs, lately drawn up hv Mr. Corlett: — " The most important matter I think the Board should take into its consideration is that of augmenting the supply of pure thermal water, which often is inadequate to the demand at the new private bam buildings. The underground concrete conserving tanks, I was informed, are built around the springs —which is a mistake—they should be away, and at a lower level, so as to receive all the water that the spring or springs are capable of giving, as when the water is backed up on a spring, or allowed to flow back at a lower temperature, the action of the spring is checked. The Beard (To Aroha Domain) is writing to the Public Works Department, Auckland, who carried out the works, for the plans of the tanks, on receipt of which. . I may form a better idea of what is to be done to remedy the matter. When I have got the yearly report you (Mr. Donne) require out of hand, I will give the Board plans for No. 1 and No. 4 baths." It was decided to plant willow trees along the Whitaker-street side of the Domain, in continuation of the line already planted; also, to set out flowering plants in suitable places. In anticipation of the new bowling green being ready for play in the coming season, the clerk was instructed to make inquiries concerning the cost of sets of bowls for the use of visitors. It was decided to instruct the band to cease playing in the Domain on Thursday evenings until spring. The Works Committee was authorised to plant an ornamental hedge on the south side of the bowling green. The request of the Coronation Celebration Committee that the Board should take in hand the erection of a flag-staff, and have the flag unfurled on Coronation Day, was agreed to. A second request, that the Board should donate £10 from its funds in aid of coronation festivities, was held to be beyond its power, and accordingly declined. Messrs. Donald and O'Meagher were appointed to act with the Mayor on the Works Committee. It was decided to have displayed printed notices inform patrons of the baths that Dr. Craig, medical officer, might, be consulted, free of charge, for general directions as to the use of the baths and drinking waters. Special advice could be obtained on payment of the usual fees. A proposition that on Coronation Day the Domain office and the baths should be closed from ten a.m. to four p.m. was carried. The application of the clerk for an increase in his salary was deferred for consideration at the next meeting. The following financial statement was laid on the table by the clerk:—"Receipts: Baths, £39 17s; library. £1 2s; towels, £3 17s: tennis, 2s: total. £44 18s, being a decrease of £15 19a 8d on the corresponding period of 1901. Cash in bank, £404 16s 3d; cash in hand, £2 15s 9d: total. £407 12s; less accounts passed for payment. £65 9s 9d, leaving credit balance of £342 2s 3d. On the conclusion of domain business a short special meeting of the Borough Council was held. It was decided to advertise for applications, retainable at the next ordinary meeting of the Council, for the position of foreman of works.
