The Women's Christian Temperance Union carried a resolution regretting Mr. Woolley's inability to.visit New Zealand, and assuring him of a hearty welcome when he revisits the colony. The next sitting of the Appeal Court is fixed for June 30. The Gazette announces that July 16 will be observed as Arbor Day. Regulations for the examination of engineers, which come into force on August 1, are gazetted. Arthur Miller, employed in Hill's brickyard, had one of his arms dragged into the cog-wheels of a machine yesterday, and pulled away from the sockets. Dunedin, Friday. Mr. Andrew Mercer, J.P., who was Mayor of- Dunedin in 1874, died this morning. Deceased . was an early settler in Otago', having arrived in the Philip Laing in 1848. Palmerston North, Friday. In response to representation, the Minister for Lands has promised to have a report prepared as to necessary protective works in Oroua River, which threatens to overflow the banks at Awahuri and Oroua bridge. Christchurch, Friday. The Acting-Premier informed a deputation from the Avon Road Board ; that he would ask Dr. Mason to reinvestigate the question of a site of a permanent infectious diseases hospital for Canterbury health district, and would see that objections to the present site received full cou : sideration.
