RAILWAY FATALITY.

i '-*-^ —— , A MAN KILLED NEAR THE MOUNT » EDEN STATION. > Between- half-past six and seven o'clock . yesterday morning, a carter named Alexander Sneddon, reported to Constable Carroll, at the Eden Terrace police station, that he ' had discovered the dead bodv of a man on i the railway line in, Boston Road, near the 5 gaol. Constable Carroll, on going to the t spot indicated, found the body in a shock- . ingly mutilated condition. The top of the > head had been taken off, and both legs and , the left arm were very badly crushed. The . hat and pipe of the unfortunate man were . found on the line near the Khyber Pass , bridge, and an examination showed that he , had apparently been run over by the early morning train, and 'dragged along the line [ for a short distance. On the body being removed to the morgue it was identified by Constable Firirierty as that of a labourer . named Patrick Bartley, residing in Unionstreet. > As far as can be learned, Bartlev was last seen alive in Boston Road by a young man i named Hedley. It is supposed that he was run over and killed by a train which left , Auckland at ten minutes to six yesterday morning. The driver of this train states that there was a light on. the engine, that , a good lookout was kept, but that nothing was observed on the line. As no blood was found oh the engine or the cow-catcher it is surmised that the deceased may have thrown himself between the trucks, ' and so have been run over. Bartley. who leaves a widow and family, was of feeble intellect, and was examined last week by two doctors, who decided that he was not sufficiently insane to be admitted to the asylum. He was lately admitted to the Costley Home, but he left there shortly afterwards, and would not return. For the two or three days prior to his death, he had been wandering about the city, and his friends had been unable to find him. ; An inquest will be held before the coroner, Mr. Gresham, at the Criterion Hotel; at .ten o'clock this morning.
