■■''■■"/ DEVONPORT. Trip. Devonport Borough "Council met last evening-. Present: Messrs. E. W. Alison (the. Mayor). J. Logan, J. Handley, W. Philson, F. E. Mason, J. Walker, and H. Baulf. '■' Harbour Board: The acting-secretary of. tho Auckland Harbour Board wrote asking the Council to make an appointment to the vacancy caused on the Auckland, Harbour Board'by the resignation of Mr. M. Niccol. The .Mayor proposed that Mr. J. Walker re-, present the Council on the Board. -Mr. Baulf seconded, and the motion was carried. Tenders: Tenders were received for the lease from the Council of two acres of land at Shoal Bay for 21 years, as follows: — Takapuna Jockey Club, £4 2s 6d per r.unum; Frank B. Ross, £3 per annum; I. Bogue, £3 per annum: P., Dumper, £2 per annum. Tho highest tender was accepted. Building Permits: Permits to build were granted to U. A. Spraggon for a building in Waterview Road, and to J. Scott for one ill Church-street. • Correspondence: B. H. MoCallum requested that Kapai-street be formed and metalled. Work to be carried out as soon as possible. Geo. McGarry drew attention to the impassable state of Ann-street North, .and asked that scoria bo laid down opposite his premises. Resolved to carry outwork when drainage was attended to. 0. H. Broughton wrote stating that he bad now defined the boundary of his property in Burgess Road, and asked that the footpath be formed. Request granted. Jos. Willetta asked that the footpath in Williams-street be continued past ids residence. Request granted. * * Reports The recommendations of the Streets and Works Committee were adopted as follows:—That Mi. T. Le Huquet's implication for a permit to erect a boatshod in the enclosure known as the gentlemen baths ha not entertained. That a footpath in Summer-street, as applied for by Mr. Lowe and others, be made with the machine as soon as possible. That tho public pound be drained to carry off the surface water, and ft dog kennel built, and that a man be appointed at once for a month to destroy rll unregistered dogs. That no further tarring be done this season, and that Logan's and Warren's Roads be metalled at once. That Kiwi Road. Russell and Bond Streets be metalled, and also a few loads be put on Glen Road, at the discretion of the foreman of works. ONEHHNGA. i An adjourned meeting ot the Onehunga Borough Council was held last night, when there were present: Messrs. Rishworth. Shaldrick, Colledße, Kelsall, and Vause. fn the absence ot His Worship the Mayor (Mr. D. A. Sutherland). Mr. Rishworth presided. Streets and Footpaths: Several requests for improvements to be made to streets and footpaths were referred to the Streets Committee. A petition, signed by 17 burgesses, asked the Council to form n footpath from

tho corner of Norman's Hill to the intersection of Circular Road, at the residence of the Rev. C. Brown. The petition was ordered to lie on the tabic for a- fortnight.

i Telephone Communication: A letter was received from the-Government, stating that telephonic communication could bo had with Auckland on the following terms: —If iron wire is available, and the distance does not exceed six miles and a-half, capital cost £30, with an annual subscription for private residences of £16 and £19 for businesses. Tins estimate is based on the assumption that no new line would be required. The letter was received. Fire Brigade: Captain Sutherland wrote, statins that some three years ago the sum of £21 10s was paid for a new up-to-date hose-reel, th" Council paying £15. while the balance of £6 10s was paid by the fire brigade, lie asked the Council to refund the amount paid by the brigade. The letter Was referred to the Council for consideration, Mr. Sutherland to be invited to attend. The town clerk reported that three applications had l>ecn received for enrolment in the new fire brigade. It was resolved to accept these and to leave the question of the formation of the brigade in the hands of the new fire

inspector. , License: The Council if. committee recommended that the license granted to Mr. W. Ryan for a billiard saloon be extended to March 51, 1903. The recommendation was adopted. Sanitary Report: The new sanitary inspector reported that he had made a thorough inspection of each house in the borough, and that the place generally, as fat- as individual householders are concerned, is as clean as circumstances permit. Some showed carelessness, but few; were so dirty as to call for active interference. . Some nuisances are boyonil-tiio control of indivnlual licniseholdpro and require the borough authority to remove them. The present system of allowing a weekly or fortnightly nightßoil service is bad. A weekly service should be compulsory. Wooden "boxes should not be allowed. A refuse cart should be provided for the removal at all rubbish. Pigs should not be allowed to be kept near stagnant water, and a props, system of drainage is required for the Whole town. The permanent levels of the streets should be fixed and a building by-law made to prevent houses being built ill hollows with the floor level below the street line. The inspector's report was referred to the Coimcil-in-cominittee.
