RETIREMENT OF A POLICE OFFICER.

. « [by telegraph.— veess association.] PaImERSTON North, Friday. • UNDER the new police regulations SergeantMajor Ramsay, officer in charge of the Palmerston police district, sends in his papers to the Department to-morrow. SergeantMajor Ramsay joined the force at Christchurch in 1862, and since then was stationed at Lyttelton, Invercargill, Dunedin, Wellington, and several smaller towns. He lias been in charge at Palmerston for the past three years, and is in possession of a unique record in that during 40 years service he has never had a day's leave of absence lor sickness or a holiday. At present ho is physically and mentally capable of carrying out his duties with distinction, and surprise is expiessed at his retirement.
