TAKAPUNA JOCKEY CLUB'S . SUMMER MEETING.

THIRD DAY.

The Takapuna Jockey dub brought their summer carnival to a conclusion on Saturday afternoon.

The day was beautifully fine, and the heat of the sun was tempered by the refreshing breeze from the waters of the gulf, stretching away to the north of the course. The attendance was satisfactory, in spite .of a big counter-attraction. Speculation was brisk, and during the day the sum of £10,338 was passed through the totalisators, making the sum of £29,335 for the three days, as against £25,914 tor tho corresponding meeting last year.. / The afternoon's amusement was marred by a sad accident which occurred during the running of . the Steeplechase. While leading the field in the crosscountry race Rufus fell, and his rider, H. Berry, was thrown with such violence that he died from his injuries. In the Welter Handicap there was a narrow escape from a catastrophe. Brilliant (ridden by W. Satman), who was running about the centre of the field, fell, and for .a moment or so it seemed as though some of the other contestants would also be brought down.
