Heavy rain interfered with the play this morning, and the first round was not started until after eleven o'clock. -
The chief match of interest to Auckland bowlers was that between Ponsonby and Newmarket, which resulted in a great surprise, Ponsonby winning by a' few points. The defeat of Newmarket puis that team on the same terms as Wellington and other clubs for tho championship, and the issue is at present very open. Victoria and Palmerston are leading with three losses, but as there are yet four rounds to be played, it is hard to say who will win. Mount Eden had a hard tussle with Cfisborne. some fine play being witnessed. The inter-club contest concludes to-morrow, and on Monday the competition for the warehousemen's trophy will he played, to be followed by the Huddart-Parker Cup competition. Some very strong rinks have entered for these contests, and some excellent play should take place. There was a large attendance of bowlers at the smoke oorcert this evening, and a very enjoyable time was spent.
