AUCKLAND SWIMMING CLUBS NIGHT GALA.
EXCELLENT sport was provided for a goodly assemblage of the, general public at the Al.-. - bert-street Baths last night, when the members of the Auckland ' Amateur Swimming Club held their second night gala. Ladies, ; ii and young folk predominated, as they in-' ,v;| variably do at this body's gatherings. The enclosure was tastefully decorated with bunting, and presented a very gay appearance, but the sultry oppressive nature of the wea- ' ther prevented one from enjoying the show as / much /as would • probably have been the case had conditions meteorological been, mors endurable. All the events v went with a' smoothness and'swing rarely in evidence at swimming functions nowadays, hence the ; management is to be complimented. The. principal event, 72yds handicap, proved a most exciting : race .from-.beginning to end. The first heat of the race was won by G. A. Tyler, scratch, and the final by/D. Garrity, -■' ! lOis., after.; an unquestionably; fine struggle. . ', Officials chosen to control the gathering were as follows:— Messrs. H. G. Chevis and J. W. Gittos, ; and J. Russell; /-/ timekeepers, Messrs. S. E. Hughes, W. Dickey, and R. W. St. Clair.: Starter, Mr. A. Goldwater. Handicapper, referee, and check starter, Mr. W. B. Eyre. Assistant referee, Mr. W. H.' Mer- > cer. Costume steward, Mr. A. Williams. Call stewards. Messrs. J. W. Browne and F. Bur- ■■■: gess. Result board, Mr. E. O'Hare. Some very appreciable selections were played throughout the gathering by, Messrs. Whites' string band. Appended are the various results: — 72yds Maiden (scratch).— heat: S. J. Easdown, 1; J. W. The swimming of the young ladies was very croditable, and indicated a consistent training:. Girls' Neat-header: This event was won by Miss Townsend, the only contestant.
