MAIN TRUNK RAILWAY.
FUTURE POLICY OF THE RAILWAY
LEAGUE. A meeting of the North Island Main Trunk Kail-way League was held yesterday in the secretary's office, Fort-street. The Hon. E. Mitchclson presided.
The principal questions before the meeting were the recent dismissals from the railway works and an invitation from the Farmers' Union for members of the league to go -on the proposed tour north of Auckland. " , It was resolved, " That in view of the next session of Parliament steps be taken by the league to comply with the request of the Farmers' Union to make a visit through the northern districts with the object of securing a rapid extension and completion of, the railway; further, that every effort be made to induce our members of Parliament to obtain larger votes for the Main Trunk railway from Wellington to Hokianga, and failing the requisite action on their part, the loague pledges itself to secure such representation in Parliament as will be effective for the purpose of completing the railway." A sub-committee was appointed consisting of Messrs. J. H. Upton, G. Peacocke, and Thomas Coates, to arrange for members of the league to accompany members of the Farmers' Union on the expedition North, arid also to ask the Chamber of Commerce to appoint some of their members to accompany the party.; The league also passed the following resolutions: ■..■■.:■.■■ " That the secretary call a special meeting with the Auckland members of Parliament after receipt of a report from members of the league on the expedition North." "That the Auckland city members of Parliament be in future invited to all meetings of the league." "That the league's dolegates going North impress upon the settlers the necessity of subscribing to the funds of the league." A hearty vote of thanks was passed to the league's commissioner for his reports sent from time to time as to the progress of the works south of Poro-o-tarao.
