SHORT OF WATER. - Speculation was: rife in" shipping circles yesterday (says the Sydney Daily Telegraph of ;January 16) when: the German four-masted barque Adelaide, a large vessel of 3009 tons register, bound from New York to Yokohama, was signalled off the -port. It was first thought the barque was in distress, but, upon boarding her in Watson's Bay, a representative of the Daily Telegraph ascertained that she was short of fresh water. Captain Kobbe reported that when six weeks out from New York it was discovered that two of the three fresh water tanks r- on board were .leaking freely. Condensed water was then brought I into use, but as the passage to Yokohama carried with it a period in the tropics, the I captain believed that the health of his crew ! would be seriously jeopardised by the too frequent use of the condensed water. It was I then decided to put into Sydney, and after the tanks have been repaired and fresh water taken on board, the barque will resume her voyage. __________________ POET OF ONEHUNGA. ■ ARRIVALS. ■ Rotoiti, s.s., J.
