WRECKED AT THE ISLANDS. PART OF THE CREW MISSING. The Union Company's steamer Ovalau, which arrived from the Eastern Pacific last evening, brought intelligence of the wreck of the British barque Savernake on the island of Reao, or Clermont, one of the Paumotu Group. - The news of the wreck of the vessel was brought to Papeete by the schooner Maurice, one of the vessels engaged in the mterisland trade, which vessel had picked up the chief officer and three men oil -<*naa, or Chain Island. The Savernake. sailed from San Francisco for Queenstown on October 9 last, with a cargo of wheat, and was .wrecked on Is ovember 14 last. All the crew got on shore safely, and 011 the 17th, the captain and two men started in one of the barque's boats for Gambiei Island to obtain assistance, Mr. Sneller (the ! chief- officer) and three men leaving in another boat the same day for Tahiti. ; On January 6 the chief officers boat was fallen in with bv the Maurice, and the men taken on board,"and treated with every care and attention. They had had a very hard time of it on their long journey in an open boat, and were in a half-starved condition when rescued. • ' The Maurice arrived at Papeete on January 9, and the wreck of the Savernake was reported .to H.B.M. Consul, who at once placed himself in communication with His Excellency the Governor of the French Establishments in Oceania, with the result that the French gunboat Zelee was despatched to the scene of the wreck. No news had been received of the boat containing the captain and three men who had left for Gambier Island, and the Zelee had instructions to search for the missing boat. Ten of the crew remained behind with the wreck when the boats started. The Savernake was an iron barque of the following dimensions : —Length, 218 f t; breadth, 37.1 ft; depth, 22.7 f t; tonnage, 1334. She was built at Stockton, England, in 1869, and was owned by Mr. K. Hodgens, of Liverpool. She was under the command of Captain Toole.
