AN AUSTRALIAN OPINION ON FEDERATION.
[ST TELEGRAPH. PRESS ASSOCIATION.] Christchurch,, Tuesday. Hon. C. E. Pilcher, M.L.C., of New South Wales, in the course of an interview, said that federation, if submitted to the people again on the lines of the existing Act, would be rejected by a large majority of all the Australian colonies, as they-are opposed to federation under the scheme of the existing Act. He predicts that if the Common* wealth Government do not realise the absurdity of the course they are adopting the much vaunted federation will be short lived. The people's confidence in the existing federation has been misplaced. He suggested that in the event of New Zealand entertaining the idea of joining the federation she should make it a condition that the most objectionable features in the existing federal scheme be modified or altered. The people of Australia do not object to federation, but desire certain provisions of the Act and its administration repealed or qualified.
