THE ARIADNE CASE.
[BY TELEGRAPH.—PRESS ASSOCIATION.] Wellington, Monday. The Police Department is advised that Captain Mumford, who was committed for trial on the charge of wrecking the yacht Ariadne, has been rearrested in Christchurch on a charge" of endeavouring to dissuade Mrs. Downing, of Sydney, from giving evidence against him. CiiRiSTCiiURCH, 1 Monday. ; Mumford was charged at the Police Court, this morning with attempting to dissuade a Crown witness, Annie Downing, from giving evidence by means of a bribe. He was remanded till to-morrow.
The Ariadne trial was further adjourned from January 13 to January 20.
A meteorological kite was flown to an altitude of 15,900 ft at Blue Hill Observatory, U.S., recently. This is the highest flight on record in America even for balloons. Four and three-quarter miles of piano wire ormed the line. The air was very dry ami the temperature freezing at the highest point.
