[BY telegraph.PßESS ASSOCIATION.] '- ' New Plymouth, Sunday. The Educational Institute met again on Saturday night. A remit from Wanganui, urging that the time has arrived when the Department should issue no more " E" certificates evoked considerable adverse criticism, and was eventually lost. Another Wanganui remit, that the Department approach the university, with the view of getting it to conduct " the teachers' aftd Civil Service examinations, and that the same examination suffice for " D", Civil Service, matriculation, and junior Civil Service scholarship, was defeated without debate. It was resolved that the Department should no longer allow any part of the "D" certificate to be obtained through the matriculation examination. A Southland remit, that the institute expresses dissent from the Salaries Commissioners' proposal to withdraw departmental recognition of university degrees in classifications of teachers, was debated at length, and finally lost on division by 23 to 17. A resolution was carried asking the University Senate to make provision, to allow extramural students to obtain the necessary laboratory practice to enable them to sit for a degree in science. The following Auckland remit was carried :—" That it is desirable that the Examination and classification of pupil-teachers should be uniform throughout the colony, and be undertaken by the Department." ■ A North Canterbury remit, that the time lias now come for an alteration in the present pupil-teacher system, caused a good deal of discussion, but was eventually rejected by 35 to 5. The election of officers resulted as follows: —President, Mr. Murray (Auckland); treasurer, Mr. J. G. L. Scott (Christchurch); secretary, Mr. T. H. Gill (Wellington) ;. executive, Messrs. W. Davidson (Dunedin), R. D. Stewart (Auckland), and W. T. Grundy (Wellington. The Council adjourned at- midnight till Monday. The visiting teachers were entertained by the local institute on Saturday, being taken to the foot of the mountain. Owing to the heavy rain no ascent could be made, but the party adjourned to the neighbouring .school, and in spite of the weather spent an enjoyable time.
