The Daily Express advocates the granting of concessions in West Africa, or the full recognition of French rule in the New Hebrides, as a means of settling the French shore difficulty in Newfoundland. (Received January 5, 5 p.m.) Sydney, January 5. In reference to the cable suggesting the granting to France of concessions in the New Hebrides with the view of settling the Newfoundland French shore question, Mr. Barton has requested Lord Hopetoun to inform Mr. Chamberlain that public opinion in Australia, had undergone no change, and the Commonwealth Government had the gravest objections to any weakening of British hold on the NewHebrides. Mr. Barton states that lie has no fear that the British Goevrnment will take any steps, but he wishes to strengthen Mr. Chamberlain's hands. .
